Lance SPL
As a result of my suggestion at the last AGM at Sheffield for the club to have access to a Lance SPL, after much searching I have found two, a lance SPL and LT both at the same site in the midlands, both are in “running” order. The registration of the LT is 06 BX 35 jog any memories of which battery it belonged? Were you the driver?
I am trying to identify the registration number on the SPL as it has been removed but I do know that its been well painted and has a layer of union-jack stickers on the tailgate, I think that it may have been a 15 Bty or 51 Bty as there is an impression of a square sticker on the side of the body! Who knows who fitted a Bedford tool-bin behind the crew cab?
I have had the opportunity to drive both and have to say it took me back 20yrs, but the funny thing is I knew where all the controls were and off I went.
Unfortunately time and misuse has not been kind to both, they are in a dreadful state and are in need of some desperate TLC. (Paint cleaning and body repairs).
We have been given the opportunity to buy the SPL, and, best of all, a location to keep it.
With about 40 acres to drive in, so for those frustrated track drivers the chance to re-live the past and drive tracks again. And there is even the opportunity to drive one of six AFV432, Saracen and snow cat, at a cost however. (Contact me for details)
For those not at the last reunion I offered to find and buy an SPL as I had seen them for sale for around the £3500 mark this would have been for the use of the club and to use at reunions (alla the Bennet centre), some members at the reunion also showed a big interest in the idea, however the cost of these sought after vehicles has gone up due to the scrap value of aluminium, so many have now been cut up to make coke cans!!!
It would be nice to keep a piece of living history, I would like to thank Kevin (gusty) Gale who is looking into funding from the national lottery, but like all good things their funding has to be matched, so now the grovel, we need to find £7000 to buy her first off then at a guess a further £10,000 to put her into a parade state, then we have running cost's and insurance which will be in the region of £4000.
A bank account has been set up for the fund raising, so can you all dig deep and send your contributions to the club treasurer, there are at present some 700 members of the club and a £10 contribution for every member will buy her for the use of the club and its members to take you back twenty years, so dig deep. Has anybody got any parts? Or know of any?
If you would like to become hands on with the restoration please contact me, perhaps we can arrange a “regimental” weekend or two with some sandbags to tell those ever-bigger stories.

So come on and dig deep and help

Restore a bit of History
